Odisha to Launch New Excise Policy in September 2025 with Focus on Enforcement and Awareness

ONL Bureau : Odisha is set to introduce a new excise policy by the end of this month, according to Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.

The announcement comes as the government finalizes preparations and awaits a review meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the coming days.

Speaking to media, Harichandan confirmed that a delegation had visited two states to study their excise frameworks and returned with recommendations. The new policy will incorporate best practices and aim to strengthen enforcement against illegal liquor sales.

“The government has already initiated all necessary preparations. Within a day or two, we will hold discussions with the Chief Minister to finalize the policy,” Harichandan stated.

Key features of the upcoming policy include:

Stronger crackdown on unauthorized liquor trade

Intensified enforcement operations across the state

Strict punitive measures for violators

A month-long awareness campaign titled “Nisha Nuhe Jiban” (Life, Not Intoxication) starting October 2 on Gandhi Jayanti

The campaign will promote responsible behavior and educate citizens on the dangers of substance abuse. The Excise Department has also instructed field officers to remain vigilant and act swiftly against any irregularities.

The new policy is expected to modernize excise management while balancing economic interests with public health and safety.
